Why is Israel trying to force the Palestinian villagers in Masafer Yatta out?

Israel designated the majority of Masafer Yatta as Firing Zone 918, a closed "firing zone" to be used for military training, in the 1980s.
Over 6,000 Palestinians are now "illegal" residents in their own homes as a result of Israel's designation of over 18% of the occupied West Bank as closed military training or shooting zones since 1967.
Despite the fact that the majority of people had documentation demonstrating their ownership of their property, Israeli soldiers removed all the residents of Masafer Yatta in 1999 on the grounds that they were residing there "illegally" and had not been long-term residents.
After receiving an interim restraining order from an Israeli court a few months after their deportation, they were allowed to return "temporarily," and they have since campaigned for the right to remain on their grounds.
In Masafer Yatta, the Israeli military routinely destroys Palestinian homes and infrastructure. They also train there, using live ammunition and tanks, endangering the lives of locals.
An international digital campaign was launched last year by activists and action groups in Palestine and abroad under the hashtag #SaveMasaferYatta, in the hope of drawing attention to the imminent risk facing the residents and pressuring Israel to cease displacement efforts.
