On a Saudi Airlines flight to Singapore, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa departed from the Maldives. Mass demonstrations against Sri Lanka's economic problems had driven the president to flee to the Maldives the day before.

On Wednesday, protesters packed the streets of Colombo and, after running into police and military force and being doused in heavy tear gas, had taken over Wickremesinghe's offices, demanding his resignation as prime minister and acting president.

In the midst of a horrific economic crisis that has led to serious shortages of food and gasoline, the president of Sri Lanka departed the nation early on Wednesday. He snuck away in the middle of the night only hours before he was scheduled to step down.

On Wednesday in Colombo, police used tear gas as demonstrators surrounded the prime minister's office compound.

The protest movement which has brought Sri Lanka to the brink of change also does not have an obvious contender for the country's leadership.
