General manager Ron Hextall announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have traded for defenseman John Marino from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman Ty Smith and a third-round draft pick in 2023.

Smith, 22, has a contract worth $863,333 on average per year that runs until the 2022–2023 season.

Smith, who is 5 feet 11 and weighs 180 pounds, played in 66 games and finished the 2021–22 NHL season with five goals, 15 assists, and 20 points while averaging 17:30 minutes on the ice per game. His five goals, 45 hits, 73 blocked shots, and 66 games played were all career highs.
On Saturday, forward Rem Pitlick agreed to a two-year, one-way contract deal with the Montreal Canadiens. The native of Ottawa will make $1.1 million a year.

Pitlick transferred from the Minnesota Wild to the Montreal Canadiens in January after being taken off waivers.
