Tragedy in the Basra stadium before the Gulf Cup final

Several hours prior to the start of the Arabian Gulf Cup final, a stampede outside a stadium in the southern Iraqi city of Basra resulted in at least two fatalities and numerous injuries.
At the time of the event on Thursday, hundreds of spectators had come to see the Iraq vs. Oman game, which was set to begin at 7 p.m. (16:00 GMT) at Basra International Stadium.
The interior ministry of Iraq encouraged those without finals tickets to vacate the stadium area in a statement. The arena was described as being filled and the gates were shut.
Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the new prime minister of Iraq, pleaded with the public to assist the government in "showing the final match of [the] 25th edition of the Gulf Cup in its most beautiful form."
State media reported that giant screens were placed at different public places in Basra so that people could watch the match.
