Review of Beyoncé's Renaissance album: a happy soundtrack to a summertime full of attractive girls
The performer's seventh album appears to be aiming for cultural saturation while also honoring musicians and laborers who challenge social norms.
A new Beyoncé album is always a big deal and a moment of pop cultural harmony in a divided world. But this week's Renaissance is different since it is one that fans have had time to get ready for. Her seventh album, which was announced six weeks ago in conjunction with a Vogue cover and was followed by a single, the throwback 90s house song Break My Soul, has followed a more conventional roll-out compared to her previous two albums, Lemonade (2016) and 2013's Beyoncé, both of which debuted with little to no warning. Even Beyoncé joined TikTok earlier this month, which has become the standard promotional tool for modern music stars.
The claims made by Renaissance and the volume of sales will be rigorously examined. Renaissance is 2022's most anticipated superstar album, excluding the improbable scenario in which Rihanna releases her follow-up to 2016's Anti. The 40-year-old pop artist has already returned to the top echelons of the singles charts with songs from Renaissance. Beyoncé, the former member of Destiny's Child, joined Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney as the only performers in Billboard history to achieve at least 20 Top 10 songs as a solo artist and 10 as a member of a group when her song Break My Soul reached the country's Top 10 for the first time in six years. Break My Soul, which is her debut entry into the UK charts, is now at No. 4 there.
According to US chart researcher and pop critic Christopher Molanphy, "Break My Soul is one of the most commercial things she's released in quite some time." Even while Beyoncé was ubiquitous in pop culture in the 2010s, she wasn't a conventional hitmaker, which was interesting. It appears that she was aiming for both artistic expression and commercial success. I Am... Sasha Fierce, her last album that was full of hits, was released in 2008.
