Is Trump requesting favours from Putin once more?

May 1, 2022By Alpa

If you've ever wondered what would have happened to Ukraine if Donald Trump had been re-elected, now is your chance to find out. Here's an advice that probably went unnoticed by most people, but you can sure Vladimir Putin took it up.

Mr. Trump boasted on April 22 at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island, Fla., to the conservative Heritage Foundation that during a NATO summit while in office, he threatened that he would not honour Article V of the NATO treaty, which states that all signatories will defend any member attacked by Russia.

Consider when you'd like to drop that memory bomb.

Is it a coincidence that Trump made the remarks in a speech while Russian President Vladimir Putin is waging a barbaric invasion of Ukraine? Would any leader, concerned more about Russia's deliberate murder of civilians than his own future, have boasted of a threat not to defend NATO members at such a time?

"Russia, if you're listening..." I believe Trump was sending Putin a message, a 2022 version of his 2016 campaign invitation to hack Hillary Clinton's email accounts: "Russia, if you're listening..."

"If you're listening, Russia, I hope you're able to locate the missing 30,000 emails," he remarked at a press conference on Wednesday. "I believe you will be amply rewarded by our press."

The suggested trade-off at the time was that if Trump obtained campaign aid, he'd return the favour by cozying up to Putin's geopolitical goals, possibly even lowering sanctions.

Trump is running for president again, and he needs support, just like he did in 2016. Trump, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is likely to welcome some foreign assistance now against his rising GOP challengers. But he is well aware that he may benefit from Putin's assistance in the future, whether through hacking Hunter Biden's email accounts or a disinformation effort like to the one that resulted in the indictment of 12 Russian military officers in 2016.
