E.J. Liddell, a forward from Ohio State, is selected in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft  by the new orleans Pelicans.

The New Orleans Pelicans selected E.J. Liddell from Ohio State with the 41st overall pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday.

He took after his teammate Malaki Branham, who had been selected by the San Antonio Spurs earlier that evening with the No. 20 overall pick. Since 1947, Liddell is the 55th player to come out of Ohio State.

Liddell averaged 14.1 points and 6.1 rebounds over the course of 92 games. His 143 blocks are seventh-most in Ohio State history, while his 1,298 career points rank 32nd.

Liddell became the 60th player to score at least 1,000 points for Ohio State during the 2021–22 season by recording double-digit scoring totals in each game. With 1,298 points in a Buckeye uniform, Liddell finished his career trailing only 31 players in program history.

In his final season at Ohio State, Liddell led the Buckeyes with averages of 19.4 points and 7.9 rebounds, was named to the first team of the Big Ten, and made the third team of the AP All-Americans. He also led the Big Ten with 2.6 blocks per game.

Liddell, the nation's No. 44 prospect out of Belleville West High School in Illinois, showed potential as a freshman contributor for the Buckeyes, putting up 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds off the bench while playing in all 31 games for Ohio State in 2019–20. However, Liddell didn't develop into a starter until his second season, when he averaged 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds while playing for the Buckeyes and earning a spot on the first team of the Big Ten.

The 6-foot-7-inch junior at Ohio State got better each year. He improved noticeably his second year after becoming accustomed to the game, and then he had an even better junior year. Almost all stats improved season over season.

Liddell has completed a personal race. He spent three years in college, improved his game, and is the ideal example of what can happen when you return for another year of college and work closely with the coaching staff on player development. On Monday, Chris Holtmann, the head coach of Ohio State, remarked on 97.1 The Fan. It does not always take place. In fact, there are undoubtedly several instances where players either maintain their draft value or, in some cases, decline it. His draft stock soared. He moved up by as many as 20, 25, and the young man deserves credit for it.

Scouts and executives at the next level, more than anything, can spot a player who isn't scared to work on his skills. He has improved his outside touch, his conditioning, and his ability to guard on the perimeter after receiving advice from previous NBA experience. He has a talent for rim protection and plays considerably bigger than his given height.

He received a G-League combine invitation, where he struggled in an unaccustomed spot on the perimeter and received some harsh criticism. Liddell went to Ohio State for one more season as he committed himself to enhancing his all-around game and perimeter talents after realizing he would almost surely go undrafted.

Liddell accepted both the positives and negatives of being the center of attention at Ohio State along the way. Liddell made public the hate mail and threats he had received on social media after his team's shocking first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Oral Roberts in 2021. After an Illinois victory in 2022, Liddell bemoaned the behavior of some Fighting Illini supporters who, in his opinion, went above and above with their in-game critiques.
