Christian Eriksen verbally agrees to join Manchester United.
Christian Eriksen's short-term contract at Brentford is about to expire, and he is about to sign a three-year contract with Manchester United.
Eriksen has given the Green Light to the Red Devils, and the process of finalizing his move is already under way, according to numerous sources, the first of which was first covered by David Ornstein of The Athletic.
One of the top Premier League players of the year will join a team whose performance has declined steadily since the beginning of 2022 as a result of the trade.
Eriksen of Denmark is anticipated to be one of the first players the new United manager Erik ten Hag signs. The former Ajax manager is expected to revitalize the Red Devils.
However, why is United making a move for a 30-year-old with a heart condition? What specifics of his action? In light of the ex-Spurs playmaker's move to Old Trafford, The Sporting News explains.
Why is Christian Eriksen being acquired by Man United?
Eriksen was desired by United earlier in his career. When he was just 20 years old and playing for Ajax in an Old Trafford Europa League encounter, he made an impression on the legendary Alex Ferguson. Three years ago, when Eriksen started looking for a way out of Tottenham Hotspur, they were also widely linked to a bid. Finally, it appears that United has him.
Ten Hag has a significant rebuilding task ahead of him at United, who frequently rank among the most expensive clubs in the world despite not having won the Premier League since 2013 and finishing sixth in 2022–23.
Ten Hag couldn't have spent too much time to contemplate the possibility of signing a player who reasserted his position as one of the finest players in the top division during the second half of the season.
After making his Brentford debut on February 26, only Martin Odegaard (38) of Arsenal and Kevin De Bruyne (42) of Manchester City generated more chances than Eriksen. He gave four assists and created five "big chances."
The fact that Eriksen missed more than eight months of action before making his Brentford debut, as well as the fact that he was able to shine for a team that was competing in the Premier League for the first time and was one of the relegation favorites prior to the season's start, made his accomplishments all the more remarkable.
Every 90 minutes on average, the 30-year-old generated almost three opportunities, and he scored once as the Bees finished comfortably out of harm's way.
United supporters won't need to be reminded that Eriksen's inspiration was severely lacking during their team's disastrous season, in which they scored the fewest goals of any top-eight club.
United would have had a negative goal differential — the sum of the goals scored minus the goals allowed throughout the season — if they had given up one more goal in their 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on the season's last day.
The amount is essentially unheard of in United's history. There is no denying that a team with attacking superstars like Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo failed to live up to the sum of its pricey parts, even though this is more indicative of a string of dismal defensive efforts.
Particularly Ronaldo received criticism for not leading the frontal defensive press that is a defining characteristic of title-challenging clubs.
The need for midfielders at United is another important consideration. Even though they didn't have a lot of depth in the position to begin with, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, and Juan Mata all departed on free transfers, and they haven't been able to sign Frenkie de Jong yet either.
Eriksen is a positionally versatile midfielder who excels from set pieces, is a shrewd playmaker, and possesses a nasty, accurate shot. It is understandable why Ten Hag respects him.
When Eriksen ended his three years at Ajax, where he had previously been a member of the former Champions League winners' youth set-up after leaving Denmark as a prospect, Ten Hag had just finished his first season as the head coach of Dutch team Go Ahead Eagles.
Both individuals have won the Eredivisie three times while playing for teams that follow Ajax's renowned possession-based system. Ten Hag has also won the Dutch national coaching championship three times, and Eriksen was chosen the greatest player in the nation in 2011.
Eriksen can play, is that okay?
In early January, the midfielder formally expressed his desire to resume playing, saying: "My objective is to compete in the Qatar World Cup. I'd like to play."
"My dream is to return. Because I don't feel any difference, I'm confident that I can return. I'm back in great physical form "Eriksen tacked on "The manager must judge my performance, but my heart is not a hindrance."
After Eriksen signed with Brentford, director of football Phil Giles assured supporters that Eriksen would be secure playing for the Bees. Giles stated in the official team release that "we won't be going into any details in order to preserve Christian's medical confidentially." Brentford supporters should relax knowing that extensive due diligence has been done to make sure Christian is in the ideal condition to return to competitive football.
The cause of Eriksen's cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 has not been fully identified, and subsequent reports have even suggested that the exact cause of the heart stoppage is still unknown. Initially, according to Dr. Bradley, specialists would urge players with ICDs to refrain from returning to any strenuous sporting activities outside golf. Even while some people are starting to trust the devices more now, there is still a risk.
"Before around 2012 to 2015, [experts] advised against getting an ICD and advised against playing. Numerous studies now indicate that returning to activities may not be as risky as previously believed." Yet, according to new research, one in ten people who have an ICD because they participate in athletics or have had a serious cardiac event would experience another episode. This raises concerns about the device's dependability and potential residual liability, says Dr. Bradley.
Although cardiac screening is not universally prohibited or mandated in the United States, the majority of athletic schools still perform their own. Dr. Bradley cited a noteworthy domestic instance that happened in 1996 and involved Northwestern basketball player Nicholas Knapp, who was equipped with an ICD and was later ruled ineligible by school medical staff. Although Knapp sued the school, his initial court victory was overturned on appeal, affirming the school's ability to declare a player unfit due to cardiac issues.
The ICD is frequently at risk in contact sports due to accidental hits that take place naturally while involvement in the sport. These can harm the ICD without the patient knowing it, perhaps leading to its failure if it is later activated in response to a cardiac event.
Will Eriksen represent Denmark at the World Cup in 2022?.
Eriksen has performed admirably for Denmark since coming back. In both his first game back and first start following the heart attack, he scored.
Late in March, in a 4-2 loss to the Netherlands, he scored off the bench. A few days later, in a 3-0 victory against Serbia, he started the game and played for 80 minutes.
Eriksen, a tremendously important player for his nation, took part in every minute of Denmark's first three UEFA Nations League matches this season, helping them defeat World Cup champions France on the road and defeating Austria in Vienna with an assist under former United temporary boss Ralf Rangnick.
Eriksen will very certainly be chosen by Denmark for the November and December 2022 World Cup finals, barring injury. In Qatar, Kasper Hjulmand's team plays Les Bleus once more, Tunisia in their first encounter, and Australia in their last group match.
