Bernie Ecclestone calls Putin a "first-class person" and attributes the conflict to Zelensky.
Former Formula One leader Bernie Ecclestone called Russian President Vladimir Putin "a first-class person" and declared he would "take a bullet" for him.
Ecclestone responded, "I'd still take a bullet for him," when asked on ITV's Good Morning Britain if he still views Mr. Putin as a friend. Even if I'd prefer it didn't hurt, I'd still take a bullet for him because he's a first-rate individual.
"What he's doing is something he thought he was doing for Russia was the right thing.
"Unfortunately, he's like many businesspeople—certainly like me—in that we occasionally make mistakes. Once you've committed a mistake, you must make every effort to correct it.
"I believe that if it had been handled correctly, I'm talking about the other gentleman in Ukraine, I mean, his occupation, from what I hear, was that he was a comic once.
I believe that if he had given it some thought, he would have made a significant effort to communicate with Mr. Putin, who is a reasonable person and would have listened to him and could have probably done something about it. He appears to want to continue in that line of work.
Ecclestone claimed that President Volodymyr Zelensky's decisions could have prevented the war in Ukraine.
So just to be clear, you believe that President Zelensky should have done more to prevent this war and that it might have been avoided by Zelensky's acts, not by a change in Putin's actions, the Good Morning Britain host Kate.
Yes, Mr. Ecclestone retorted.
Mr. Ecclestone was told that he could not possibly defend Mr. Putin's conduct or the deaths of thousands of people.
“I don’t. It wasn't deliberate," he responded.
"And I'm very confident Ukraine, if they'd wanted to get out of it correctly, could have done," Ecclestone stated after stating that the war in Ukraine was not "deliberate."
Ecclestone responded "No" when asked if he had a chance to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin about "what a mess" the situation is and urge him to reconsider what he is doing. He has probably given that some thought himself. He most likely doesn't require reminding.
"I'm positive he now regrets starting this whole thing, but it didn't begin as a war,"
Bernie Ecclestone continued by claiming that President Volodymyr Zelensky's decisions could have prevented the war in Ukraine.
So just to be clear, you believe that President Zelensky should have done more to prevent this war and that it might have been avoided by Zelensky's acts, not by a change in Putin's actions, the Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway asked. Yes, Mr. Ecclestone retorted.
Mr. Ecclestone was told that he could not possibly defend Mr. Putin's conduct or the deaths of thousands of people. "I don't. It wasn't deliberate," he responded. "And I'm confident that Ukraine could have done so if they had intended to exit the situation responsibly."
When asked if he had a chance to discuss "what a disaster" the situation is with Russian President Vladimir Putin or suggested that he reconsider his course of action, On Good Morning Britain, Ecclestone stated: "No. He has probably given that some thought himself. He most likely doesn't require reminding. He definitely regrets starting this entire enterprise, but it didn't begin as a battle."
The former F1 executive was then questioned regarding his opinion of both the removal of the Russian Grand Prix from the Formula One schedule and the ban on Russian drivers.
On Good Morning Britain, he said: "I'm not in a position right now to have changed that. I'm not sure if I would have prevented that, and I most definitely wouldn't now. I also believe it is wrong to prevent Russian athletes, especially drivers, from competing in their sport. They were never involved in this to begin with. There's no need to punish them."
"The comments stated by Bernie Ecclestone are his personal opinions and are in very striking contrast to position of the modern principles of our sport," Formula One said in reaction to him.
